2017 Taiwan Scholarship & MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Award Ceremony in Malaysia

In order to encourage outstanding Malaysian students to further their studies and learn the Mandarin language in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education has awarded 35 Taiwan Scholarships and three Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to Malaysian students this year.

Sixteen of the 35 Taiwan Scholarship recipients will undertake a bachelor’s degree in Taiwan, 17 will undertake a master’s degree, and two will undertake a doctorate program. Most are majoring in science, engineering, business administration, social science, or arts programs. Three Malaysian students were awarded a Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to study Mandarin in Taiwan.

These scholarship recipients are going to begin an academic degree program or undertake a short term Mandarin course in Taiwan, from September. TECO officials William Jiang, Chu To-Ming, and Diego Bo-Wun Bai hosted a briefing session held by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia on July 28, 2017 to share information about study in Taiwan with scholarship recipients.

Chang James Chi-Ping, Head of Mission at TECO in Malaysia, said in his opening remarks that the number of Malaysian students who applied for the scholarships has been increasing in recent years, and this included applications from non-Chinese students. Hence, to facilitate the New Southbound Policy, the number of Taiwan Scholarships available for Malaysians has increased from the 20 in 2016 to 35 this year. The total period available for Malaysians to study Mandarin with a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship has also been increased, from 24 months to 36 months.
