Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary began compiling in 1987 and was completed in 1994. In the same year, the web edition was published. In 1997, the CD-ROM edition was introduced. The dictionary is a large-sized dictionary with the entire compiling work completed using computers. Over the compiling process, 253 databases were created with over 5,500 kinds of literature referenced. The dictionary contains about 167,000 entries and 18 appendices. The dictionary collects terms found in the literature and spoken language from Middle Ages through modern times. To meet public demand, it has a rich collection of regular and technical terms. The style is exact, with pronunciation and expatiation reviewed by experts. All quoted passages have been verified with synonyms and antonyms provided. With its full-text search feature, in addition to the functions found in regular dictionaries, the dictionary's electronic edition offers the functions of an encyclopedia with a copious vocabulary, search for famous sentences of poems, and textual research. On approval, parts of the dictionary are made available to the public for non-commercial use including academic research and educational promotion. For authorization statement and application form of its electronic files, please refer to Rules Governing Authorization on National Languages Committee's website.
