Hunter College Gets Ready
As part of its efforts to promote the study of Mandarin Chinese, the Education Division is administering 12 standardized language exams at 8 schools from March to June this year. The TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) and CCCC (Children’s Chinese Competency Certification) are standardized tests developed to measure proficiency of non-native speakers.

Among the schools hosting these exams will be Hunter College of the City University of New York. Hunter College has already held 4 TOCFL exams in April for nearly 100 students.

Hunter College has long held a prominent reputation for its Mandarin Chinese programs. Hunter’s Mandarin Chinese Language Flagship program aims to prepare its students to have superior proficiency in Mandarin Chinese after four years of an immersion study program. Hunter College has also developed a graduate Teaching of Mandarin Chinese program in 2008 to prepare highly skilled and well-trained Chinese teachers for a high-demand area. Since its inception in 2008, this is the only such program in the New York metropolitan area.

Professor Der-Lin Chao, Ph.D., leads the Mandarin Chinese program and has long maintained an excellent relationship with the Education Division of TECO-NY. Two of her program’s Mandarin Chinese instructors were hired from Taiwan via the Education Division and many of her highly recommended students have also received the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.

This summer, many of Dr. Chao’s students will also experience Taiwan’s rich culture firsthand and to improve their Mandarin Chinese at the National Taiwan University.
