Pluralistically Adaptive Learning in Museums: the Ministry of Education 518 International Museum Day Press Conference
The activities of Pluralistically Adaptive Learning in Museums are as follows:
1.Check into a Museum on May 18th, Get a Souvenir: People who visited the MOE’s national social education institutes or MOC museums on May 18th and checked in on Facebook got a souvenir from the information desk. It was limited to 518 souvenirs for each museum and social education institute.
2.Completing 5 Stages in Museums: Visitors could take a mission card from national social education institutes on May 18th if they wanted to join this game. If a participant completed 3 stages, he/she would get a souvenir badge; anyone who completed 5 stages would get a magic scarf. The museums designed the different stages of this interesting game to promote the 12 year basic education policy and to be suitable for adolescents and their families to join in together.
3.Admission for the following exhibits at the MOE’s museums was free on May 18: the National Taiwan Science Education Center’s temporary exhibit Story of Water on the 7th floor and the permanent exhibits on the 3rd-6th floors; National Museum of Natural Science’s permanent exhibits and the Greenhouse (except for the Space Theater, 3-D Theater and special exhibits); the National Science and Technology Museum’s permanent exhibits (except special exhibits); the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology Provisional Office Chaojing Ocean Center’s Chaojing Aquaculture Station.
In 1977, the 12th conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) declared May 18th as International Museum Day and encouraged the employees of museums worldwide to hold various activities on this day to celebrate . Since 1992, the ICOM has promoted International Museum Day by setting themes each year, and identified 2013’s theme as Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change. The meaning was as follows:
Museums show their ability to preserve and display a rich historical heritage, demonstrating creativity and energy. Creativity is an important factor for museum recovery and visitor increase, so museums are trying to reform the relationship between the traditional missions of collection maintenance and innovative development; they believe their existence and actions can transform society in a constructive way. This optimistic topic is shown as an equation: Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change. The equation dynamically integrates several concepts for identifying how museums should be, and it highlights museums’ universal values and positive effects on society. In other words, the equation also includes the complexity of museum work, and it reminds people that museums’ contributions include community development and cohesion.
Museums are like lighthouses which stand on the intersection of traditional history and future development. On the one hand, a museum sheds light on the development of human civilization, on the other hand it shows us the direction of social change. The MOE hoped that people who have never visited museums could go to museums, and enjoy the cheerful celebrations and abundant learning resources on International Museum Day or some other day. They also hoped that people would come to understand the story of human history and natural science through exhibits and be inspired by museums’ creativity and innovation.
