Officials from the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and the Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam visited the Binh Duong Economics and Technology University on February 22, 2016. Binh Duong, not far north of Ho Chi Minh City, is one of Vietnam’s provinces that is undergoing rapid economic growth rate and dynamic industrial development.

The visit was arranged by the Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam to promote educational cooperation, and help recruit the Taiwanese and Vietnamese workers and skilled professionals needed by Taiwanese businesses in Vietnam. It sees an urgent need for cooperative education/industrial cooperation between universities in Taiwan and Vietnam, particularly to help ease any tensions remaining after the anti-Chinese protests on May 13, 2015.

The Binh Duong Economics and Technology University has shown great interest in participating in industrial cooperation and cooperative education and indicated that it would like to sign an MOU with the Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam to deepen this relationship.

Another important reason for the visit was to discuss a possible visit by representatives of universities in Taiwan that will be participating in the 2016 Taiwan Education Fair in Ho Chi Minh City on March 13 and March 16, 2016. The Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam considered the education fair would be a valuable opportunity to establish more links between universities in Vietnam and universities in Taiwan and set up cooperative education projects.

During the visit, Ms. Tina Ou, the Education Attachée at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCM City explained that a delegation of representatives of 42 universities in Taiwan would be coming to visit Vietnam in mid-March, and requested Binh Duong Economics and Technology University to receive a visit from the delegation during that time. The university agreed to the request.

The university has also indicated great interest in applying for Mandarin teachers from Taiwan go to teach there, and Ms. Ou gave the university information about a wide range of Taiwan’s education initiatives, including the short term Mandarin learning program; the Broadening Horizons scheme, the Taiwan Scholarships program, and Taiwan’s VET sector and industry-academia cooperative education.
