Taiwanese Education Delegation Visits New York on a Study Tour
A delegation of Taiwanese educators who each had won a Ministry of Education Teacher of the Year award for teaching excellence went on a study tour to the eastern United States in April. The delegation was led by Lo Ching-Shui, Director General of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Youth Development Administration (YDA). The purpose of the tour included visiting outstanding educational institutions, and exploring the possibility of bilateral student exchange programs, and educational collaborations.
The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO, NY) arranged opportunities for them to observe and experience classrooms there, and interact with local educators to broaden their understanding of the educational philosophy and rationales behind local programs.
They visited the greater New York area on April 18, 2016 where one of their stops was Public School 173, the Fresh Meadows School, which is a famous public school located in Queens in New York City. PS 173 was named a “2011 Blue Ribbon School” by the U.S. Department of Education for its outstanding academic achievements. The group met with Molly Wang, the school principal and was taken on a tour of the school by Mrs. Chang Peiyu, a teacher there, giving the Taiwanese educators a chance to enjoy some classroom observations.
The Taiwanese delegation also visited Parsons School of Design in Lower Manhattan, where they heard a presentation. Parsons School of Design is one of the top art and design schools in the world.
