Promoting “Study in Taiwan” in Brunei Darussalam

In order to promote higher education in Taiwan, Chu To-Ming, the Director of the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia and Liao Yi-Ken, the Deputy Assistant Director of the Education Division visited Brunei on June 2nd and June 3rd , 2016 and talked about the quality of higher education in Taiwan.

With the assistance of the president of the Taiwan Alumni Association in Brunei, Chu To-Ming and Liao Yi-Ken paid a courtesy visit to three Chinese-taught high schools: Chung Hwa Middle School, Chung Cheng Middle School, and Kuala Belait Chung Hwa Middle School.

A key feature of their visit was an evening “Study in Taiwan” seminar that the Education Division hosted in Chuag Hwa High School. This was the first time such a seminar was held in Brunei. More than 50 parents, students, and school counseling teachers attended the seminar and raised questions. The Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam, Wan Chia-Hsing also attended to show his support at the seminar. The seminar also drew the attention of the local media which covered the event and published news items about it.

On the next day, Chu To-Ming attended an exclusive interview at the Brunei national radio station and talked about Taiwan’s excellent education system and gave information about possibilities for studying in Taiwan. According to Chu To-Ming, last year 25 students from Brunei chose to further their studies in Taiwan. The figure is lower than in some previous years, but he is confident that the number of students will increase again in the future.
