The 57TH International Mathematical Olympiad Successfully Hosted in Hong Kong

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the highest-level and largest global international mathematics competition for secondary school students. It has been held in a different country or region each year since 1959, with the aim of providing a platform for exchange and competition among highly skilled and keen young mathematicians from all around the world.
IMO 2016 was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from July 9 to 16, hosted by the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee Limited, with the support of the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government. This was the 57th time it has been held.
Professor Fuh Cheng-Der led a team of six young mathematicians from Taiwan, accompanied by Assistant Professor Yen-Chi Roger Lin as the team leader, and Professor John Meng Kai Hong as the deputy leader. The Taiwan team members won 6 awards in this year’s competition: 3 gold medals, and 3 silver medals, and the team was ranked among the top 5 of the 109 competing teams. The USA was first, followed by South Korea, mainland China, Singapore, and Taiwan.
The gold medalists were: Calvin Shao-Huia Hsu; Lee Pin-Hung; and Cheng Jung-Tao. The silver medalists were: Wang Shih-Yu; Cheng Tie-Chun; and Chiu Yu-Pin.
The results were announced at the closing ceremony. The ceremony was officiated over by: Mr. Eddie Ng Hakim, SBS, JP, Secretary for Education; Dry Geoff Smith, MBE, Chairman of the International Mathematical Olympiad Advisory Board; Prof Shum Kara Ping, Chairman of the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee; and Prof Tony F Chan, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the hosting university.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Eddie Ng Hakim, Secretary for Education, said he was happy to see the successful completion of the International Mathematical Olympiad 2016 and grateful for everyone's enthusiastic participation and support for the event, in particular the IMO Hong Kong Committee, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and all the teacher and student volunteers. He offered his warmest congratulations to the IMO 2016 awardees for their excellent achievements.
