First Taiwan Studies Chair at the Catholic University of Leuven

In conjunction with the newly established Taiwan Studies Programme at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Dr. Yang Cheming, Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of National Cheng Kung University, will be coming to KU Leuven in late February to be the first Taiwan Studies Chair.
Dr. Yang will give lectures and do research at the Faculty of Social Sciences throughout the new semester. He will also organize a two-day international seminar on “The Role of Buddhism in (inter)cultural mediation and dialogue: Sinofication, Modernization and Secularization” that will be held on May 18 and May 19, 2017. KU Leuven, the most renowned university in Belgium, has a long history of engaging in the field of oriental studies. The study of Buddhism and its related languages at the Faculty of Theology grew and became a full 4-year programme and led to the founding of the Department of Sinology at the Faculty of Humanities in 1979. To this day, this is the leading authority in Belgium on Asia-related research and study. The new Taiwan Studies Chair will further contribute to the future development of Taiwan Studies at KU Leuven and will enhance the university’s collaboration with Taiwan.
