The 2013 FAIR-Taiwan hosted its first formal welcome reception for 19 students at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

Date:
On June 26, the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) hosted a formal welcome reception at the Scarborough campus for the first cohort of 19 students who will be studying there, admitted under the FAIR-Taiwan process. Among the guests were Director General Chen of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, and Professor Franco Vaccarino, Principal of UTSC and Vice-President of the University of Toronto.

FAIR-Taiwan (大學之道專案) is a new and simplified method for admitting international students into the undergraduate program at UTSC, based on their high school academic performance and their General Scholastic Aptitude Test (GSAT 台灣學測) scores. Students admitted must then successfully complete a mandatory special summer academic and acculturation program designed to help ensure they continue to maintain excellent academic performances in university. FAIR-Taiwan is run under the leadership of Dr. Liang Hsuan Chen (陳俍璇博士), Associate Dean-Academic, and Senior Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Management at University of Toronto Scarborough, and an advisor of the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission of the Republic of China.

The Education Division and UTSC FAIR-Taiwan are collaborating to achieve the common goal of attracting more outstanding students to take up this opportunity. The Education Division attended the launch of the FAIR-Taiwan program last September and has acted as a direct contact, bridging the UTSC FAIR-Taiwan with numerous prestigious high schools in Taiwan and with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. The Education Division has also assisted Dr. Chen to make numerous visits to travel extensively in Taiwan, promoting UTSC FAIR-Taiwan and recruiting the best and brightest students to study in the University of Toronto.
