Kelowna Athletes ready for the International Children’s Summer Games in New Taipei City
Team Kelowna is a group of 20 Kelowna athletes and five coaches who were getting ready to head overseas to compete in the 2016 International Children’s Summer Games in New Taipei City in July. Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran presented each of the team members with their new City of Kelowna uniform and special pin during an event at Stuart Park in Kelowna on Tuesday, June 14, and congratulated the athletes for being selected to represent their city. Mr. Tien-Hua Tang, senior assistant director of the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver, spoke on behalf of the Taiwan government, and gave Team Kelowna an advance welcome to Taiwan and New Taipei City and wished them well in the competition.

Marriana Chen from the Taipei Trade Office in Kelowna gave the athletes a few pointers on what to expect in New Taipei City. She also taught them a few useful phrases they can use every day in Taiwan, such as “Ni hao” – “Hello” and “Xie xie” – “Thank you”.

The International Children’s Games are being held in New Taipei City from July 11 to July 16, with more than 2,000 athletes from more than 80 cities in 35 countries expected to attend. The International Children’s Games are held every year for competitors aged from 12 to 15 representing individual cities. Kelowna is the only city in Western Canada sending a team of young athletes. These are the largest multi-sport youth games in the world and they are recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The theme of this year’s game is: Be Strong Be Friends!
