2016 Taiwan Scholarship & Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Award Ceremony in Malaysia
22 Malaysian students have been awarded a Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan Scholarship to pursue an academic degree or a Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship to take a short term Mandarin course in Taiwan starting from September this year.

Twenty students received an MOE Taiwan Scholarship: 14 will begin a bachelor’s degree, 5 will begin a master’s degree, and one will begin a PhD program. This year’s Taiwan Scholarship winners are mostly majoring in the fields of: Art, Biotechnology, Engineering, Linguistics, Management, Science, and Social Science. The other two students received a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.

TECO in Malaysia held a scholarship presentation ceremony and briefing session at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia on July 29. Head of Mission James Chi-Ping Chang awarded the award certificates to this year’s recipients. He congratulated the scholarship recipients and expressed his hope that they could all contribute to Malaysia’s society and play an important role in strengthening the bilateral academic collaboration and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Malaysia after they completed their studies.

He added: “The number of applicants has increased every year. We are glad to see that it was not only Chinese students who applied for our scholarships. The number of Malay applicants who want to undertake an academic degree in Taiwan has also been increasing in these last few years. The English-taught programs offered by universities in Taiwan have become one of the popular options for non-Chinese students.”

A briefing session was also given by TECO officials William Jiang, Chu To-Ming, and Canny Yi-Ken Liao to provide the scholarship winners information about studying in Taiwan and answer any questions. More than 50 family members and friends of the scholarship winners also accepted an invitation and came along to witness the presentations and share the honor.
