Ministry of Education K-12 Education Administration visits Hong Kong 2017

A delegation of 13 people from the Ministry of Education, K-12 Education Administration and GWC Social Charity Foundation visited eight programs in Hong Kong from May 22 to May 24.
The delegation included members with expertise in different areas, and it was accompanied by Mr. Sheu Ruey Horng, Principal Deputy Director of the Liaison Division and Education Counselor at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, and Mr. Carson Chan, Deputy Education Project Supervisor.
The delegation first visited the HK Juvenile Care Centre Chan Nam Cheong Memorial School, and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Marycove Center & School which are both located in the Southern District. The School and the Center are subsidized and administered by the Education Bureau and the Social Welfare Department. The services target children who are facing emotional problems, or whose families cannot provide suitable discipline care for them. Through care, nurturing and training, the School assists children to achieve such things as establishing positive self-esteem, and building a positive outlook in life, rebuilding a good relationship with their families, loving themselves and others, committing to serving the community, and enhancing self-management skills and independence.
The delegation then visited the Faculty of Education at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, in the afternoon. Mr. Clement K.K. Ng, the Administrative Co-coordinator of the Centre for University and School Partnership (CUHK) outlined the present situation and gave an overview of kindergarten education in Hong Kong.
On the second day, the delegation visited the Society of Boys' Centres Shing Tak Centre School at Kwun Tong, Kowloon. Shing Tak Centre School serves boys aged 9 to 18, with an educational level from year 5 of primary school, to year 2 of senior secondary level, who are exhibiting behavioral and emotional problems and who receive inadequate care from their families. As well as direct service, they also provide supporting services to mainstream schools and organizations, including Professional Development Project, Learning Development Service, and the Mainstream School Supporting Service.
After that, the delegation visited Caritas Pelletier School. This includes Pelletier Hall which provides residential care service for adolescent girls aged 13 to 18, who have behavioral and/or emotional problems, and who may be under the influence of undesirable peers or have relationship problems with their families, and who therefore require a period of group living experience away from their families. It can accommodate up to 110 girls in need. A school for social development - Pelletier School is provided on the same premises to cater for the girls’ special educational needs. Mainstream curriculum & extra-curricular activities are provided.
On the last day, the delegation visited Hong Kong Christian Service at Sham Shui Po, and S.H.K. St.Christoper’s Home. The Home served 545 children from January to December 2016. 320 children received residential care services, among whom 217 were from Small Group Homes, and 103 were from Foster Care Service. 225 children received after-school care service.
