Taiwanese Team Wins Gold Medal in International Biology Olympiad in the United Kingdom
From July 22 to 29, 2017, a team from Taiwan participated in the 28th International Biology Olympiad, held at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and co-organised by the Royal Society of Biology. Representing Taiwan were four secondary school students: Chen Tai-Yi, Liu Chun-Wei, and Li Jui-Ting – all from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School – and Lu Chien from National Hualien Senior High School. They were among 264 participants from 68 countries competing.

The Taiwanese team performed strongly in all elements of the Olympiad across the week, with each member awarded a gold medal for their results. Taiwan’s Minister of Education, Wen-Chung Pan, congratulated the group on their achievement.

The selection process to determine the team members was split into four separate stages, namely preliminary selections, semi-finals, training camps and finals. This year, at the preliminary stage, 3,412 students took part. Over the course of the selection, this number was whittled down to the four competitors ultimately chosen to represent Taiwan.

The team was formed by Professor Cheng Jiin-Tsuey from the Biology department at National Sun Yat-sen University, along with more than twenty other professors who were responsible for advising the team and overseeing training. Professor Cheng also served as the group leader and accompanied the team to the University of Warwick to participate in the Olympiad.

A closing and awards ceremony took place on the final day of the Olympiad. Mr Ouyang Yen-Heng, Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom, attended the closing ceremony to cheer on the delegation, celebrate their victory, pay tribute to their accomplishments, and convey the congratulatory message from the Education Minister.

The Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom invited the entire delegation to a banquet in their honour on August 3 in order to commemorate the great success of all four team members, and those involved in recognising and developing scientific talent among Taiwanese youth. The group departed to return home to Taiwan on August 6.
