Dr. Karen Eng shares her success story at a Global Federation of Chinese Business Women – Chicago Chapter meeting

Dr. Karen Eng, President and CEO of CSMI spoke to the Chicago Chapter of the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women on January 21, 2018, at the Cultural Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago. Dr. Eng graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a biochemistry and biology degree, and from the New England College of Optometry as a Doctor of Optometry, and she is passionate about entrepreneurship and actively mentors women and minority business owners. CSMI is an ISO 9001-2008 certified firm owned by minority women. CSMI specializes in Engineering Consulting services for FDA and USDA regulated industries. It provides complete turnkey operations (engineering/procurement/construction) to bring projects from concept to implementation, utilizing multiple disciplines. The services encompass project management, process engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering, and field construction engineering. In her remarks Dr. Eng mentioned that whenever people call her “a guy in a woman’s body” she takes it as a compliment, given that she works in a male-dominated industry. She describes herself in three words – passionate, organized, and dedicated – and she credits those qualities for her successful career. Dr. Eng told the gathering how one of her mentors stressed that in order to lead effectively, she had to be balanced. Every time they spoke together, her mentor would ask her how she was doing professionally, and personally, and would also ask how her family was doing. This concept of balance rings true to her, so Dr. Eng has passed it along to her staff at CSMI. Dr. Eng promotes a very action-oriented approach to business, sticking to tasks until they get done while still being present and accessible. She encourages anyone with a question or issue to come to her or call her at any time. Calvin Ho, Director General at TECO in Chicago, also attended and he expressed his appreciation to the Chicago Chapter of GFCBW for its organization of numerous lectures and activities, networking, and for sharing business related information. He also expressed his admiration and respect for all the prominent women in various fields who have achieved both career success and social respect, and he encouraged all women to continue their personal development and community service. Wang Wei-Zan, Director of the Cultural Center at TECO and Jenny Lai, its Vice Director, also attended and enjoyed the occasion.
