Taiwan Cambridge University Scholarship Recipients join the Cambridge Trust for its Annual Scholars Reception

The Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust held its annual Scholars’ Reception at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge on Monday April 23, 2018. Mr. Ouyang Yen-Heng, Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, was delighted to be invited to attend as a guest of the Cambridge Trust. This annual event celebrates the achievements of Cambridge scholars from all over the world, including many from Taiwan whose studies are supported by a Taiwan Cambridge University Scholarship.

The Taiwan Cambridge University Scholarship was established in 2011, and a new agreement covering the 2016–2021 period was signed in 2015 by Mr. Ouyang and Mrs. Helen Pennant, Director of the Cambridge Trust. The scholarships are available to scholars from Taiwan undertaking a PhD programme at the University of Cambridge, with the costs shared equally by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan and the University of Cambridge.

Sue Osterfield, the Deputy Director of the Cambridge Trust, has travelled to Taiwan each year to promote the Taiwan Cambridge University Scholarship programme, and it has flourished and attracts strong numbers of outstanding Taiwanese applicants. A total of thirty-seven Taiwanese students have so far been awarded the Taiwan Cambridge University Scholarship, including the most recent five scholarship recipients scheduled to commence their PhD programmes in October 2018.

The annual Scholars’ Reception provides a valuable opportunity for the Education Division to maintain contact with staff members of the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge Trust involved in administering the scholarship, as well as Taiwanese academics who have benefitted from the award. Many of the Taiwanese scholars currently studying at the University of Cambridge attended the Scholars’ Reception after meeting with Mr.Ouyang earlier in the day.
