"crossover" Exhibition organized by the Taiwanese Student Association of Tama Art University in Japan

The Taiwanese Student Association of Tama Art University (多摩美術大學) organized "crossover", a joint exhibition of works by ten Taiwanese students in Japan, with assistance from the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO). The exhibition was planned by Taiwanese students working in different art fields and was held in Shibuya, a vibrant area of Tokyo very popular with young people, from February 19 to 24. The works by the ten Taiwanese students included oil paintings, watercolor paintings, sculptures, and illustrated books. 
The poster for this exhibition features (visible on the wall behind the people in the photo) two color images. The students explained that the green image represents “art” which can be more introverted and indulgent and accommodating, while the orange one represents “design” which is acutely externally oriented. However, both are actually variations on the same original basic shape, and this symbolizes that Taiwanese students have been influenced by Japanese culture and by the wildly-open creative learning environment of Tama University. 
The works by the ten Taiwanese students represent a crossover between Japan & Taiwan, and a crossover between the spaces and developments originally categorized as “art” or “design”. These cultural crossovers have resulted in works which reconstruct and intertwine elements from each culture and present something brand-new.
Personnel from the Education Division are happy to support events like this to provide a stage for Taiwanese students in the field of art to express themselves. They visited the exhibition at Tama Art University on February 20 and talked with students from Taiwan to learn more about their experience of studying and living in Japan.
