The Chinese Taipei baseball team, registered to represent Taiwan, claimed the championship in the 2019 PONY World Series League, held in Pennsylvania on August 15 at Lew Hays Pony Field in Washington Park. The Chinese Taipei team defeated the Bay County, Michigan team soundly, 9-1 in the final match, to win the 2019 PONY League World Series. This is the tenth championship title won by the Chinese Taipei team since 1993, and the fourth in the last five years.

PONY is a non-profit baseball and softball league that organizes tournaments involving regional teams from North America, and teams representing 40 different countries. The PONY League is a baseball series specifically designed for players in their formative early-teen years, and the games are played on an appropriately sized field.

President Tsai Ing-wen sent her warmest congratulations to the team on hearing the news. Dr. Min-Ling Yang, the director of the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) presented the team with congratulatory certificates from President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Chen Chien-jen.

President Tsai praised the team’s Pony League World Series victory which demonstrates that Taiwan remains a global powerhouse in youth baseball. She lauded the players—who are mainly from Taipei Municipal Changan Junior High School (臺北市立長安國民中學)—for their hard training and stellar performances in championships. The team has set a new milestone in Taiwan’s baseball history with its “triple triumph”, consecutively winning the National Championship, the East Asia Championship in Japan, and this world championship series in the US. She also acknowledged the coaches, teachers, and parents who gave everything to help make this outstanding team’s triple triumph possible.

The final match at Lew Hays Pony Field drew many supporters from Pittsburg’s Taiwanese community, and local Taiwanese people organized a cheer group to spur on the Chinese Taipei baseball team. The team’s performance was outstanding and the spectators at the field all praised their wonderful teamwork.
