Taiwan International Science Fair Team Participates in “Scientists of the Future” - an International Research and Engineering Projects Competition at Moscow State University

A Taiwan International Science Fair team—comprising two National Taiwan Science Education Center personnel and five students—participated in the “Scientists of the Future” International Research and Engineering Projects Competition held at Moscow State University in mid-October, 2019.

The competition was part of the All-Russia Science Festival organized by the Ministry of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, in conjunction with the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, Moscow City Government, and Moscow State University. Its purpose is to revive school students' interest in studying the exact sciences, natural sciences, and engineering sciences; to create supportive conditions for children's intellectual development; to disseminate and popularize scientific knowledge; and to improve the related pedagogical skills of teachers from Russia and other countries.

Secondary school students in grades 9–11 were invited to take part with an individual project or a two-person project in any of nine categories, including mathematics, physics, and programming. This was the first time that Taiwan has been one of the foreign countries invited to send students to compete, and Keng Chung-Yung, the Representative at the Representative Office in Moscow (TMECCC), and William Lu, Secretary of the Education Division of TMECCC, visited the team during the competition to show their support.

The five students presented their individual projects on topics in the fields of chemistry, engineering, and programming. Anthony Li from Pu Tai Senior High School, won a 3rd place for his “Understanding the pharmacology and toxicology of Chinese herbs using machine learning techniques” research project.

The National Taiwan Science Education Center helps students from all over Taiwan to enter international science competitions and Olympiads. In 2019, selected 22 entries created by 26 students from all over Taiwan to participate in various competitions in the US, Italy, Russia, and other countries. It also holds an annual Taiwan International Science Fair to conduct exchanges in STEM and STEAM fields with countries over the world.
