More than seventy Indonesian teachers of Mandarin Chinese recently completed a new online training course developed by the Taiwan Education Center at Surabaya in Indonesia as a practical response to the Covid-19 pandemic. They completed the online course over two weekends: on July 4 and 5, and a week later, on July 11 and 12.

Ou Shufen, Director of the Education Division of TETO, spoke at the online opening ceremony and welcomed all the participants. She pointed out that Taiwan s Ministry of Education has been offering a range of programs to promote Chinese education abroad for many years now. It’s also developed and compiled teaching and learning resources, and online platforms such as Huayu 101, to help people all over the world to learn Chinese, and also learn more about Taiwan and its culture. She thanked Asia University and Airlangga University, its partner university in Indonesia, for their support promoting Taiwan’s higher education and Chinese language teaching in Indonesia.

The online training units covered such key areas as: text understanding, oral expression, vocabulary and grammar teaching, classroom activity design, evaluation of learning effectiveness, and introduced a range of iPad and Chinese digital courses and showed ways to incorporate them into classroom teaching. The units were presented by teachers from Asia University, National Taiwan University, Tsinghua University, and Mingxin University of Science and Technology. The Indonesian teachers participated enthusiastically and gave positive feedback about the content and the quality of the teaching.

This first online training course was organized by Taiwan Education Center Surabaya and Asia University course with financial support from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and from the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO).
