Overseas experts and scholars who work on topics related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia–Pacific region, and Sinology can apply for a Taiwan Fellowship to undertake advanced studies and research at universities and research institutions in Taiwan. The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) encourages scholars to apply. One hundred Taiwan Fellowships are awarded each year but they’re highly competitive: seven people applied for one through the Education Division last year, and two were successful. Three people lodged an application this year.
After application forms and supporting documents have been submitted on-line, TECRO verifies the details, evaluates the potential academic contribution the applicants can make, and sets out its reasons for recommending them. After the Ministry of Foreign Affairs determines who will receive a Taiwan Fellowship, TECRO will inform the applicants whether their application was successful.
This year, the Education Division recommended three applicants—from Goucher College, Johns Hopkins University, and Virginia State University—each working in different fields.
The Taiwan Fellowships are funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated by the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Central Library, where the visiting scholars can also access valuable materials.
