Columbia University is one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S, and the fifth-oldest institution for higher education in the US. In 2020, there were approximately 150 Taiwanese students studying there.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and Columbia University have reached an agreement to renew and expand the Taiwan Columbia Scholarship program which provides jointly funded scholarships for Taiwanese students to attend this Ivy League university. A new memorandum of understanding was signed in July 2020 by Dr. Min-Ling Yang, Director of the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) on behalf of the MOE, and by Dr. Ira Katznelson, Interim Provost of Columbia University.
The Taiwan Columbia Scholarship was established in 2014 to provide scholarship funding for students from Taiwan to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program at Columbia. Previously, only students in the School of Arts and Sciences were eligible to apply for a scholarship. The new agreement signed in July extends eligibility to apply to now include Taiwanese students attending Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The Taiwan Columbia Scholarship program awards up to five scholarships each year for students from Taiwan, A student who wants to apply for a scholarship must first independently gain admission to Columbia University through the regular admission process. A student who has been accepted into the university and awarded a Taiwan Columbia Scholarship will have all tuition and fees fully funded by the program and receive a living stipend, for a period of three years.
