Sports Administration formulates a three-in-one strategy for the 2021 Chengdu Universiade, 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and the Upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics

Date:
The Sports Administration has formulated a three-in-one preparatory strategy for the 2021 Chengdu Universiade, 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and the 2024 Paris Olympic

The 2021 31st Chengdu Universiade and 2022 19th Hangzhou Asan Games have been delayed until 2023 due to COVID-19 and also, from this September, qualifying competitions for the 2024 33rd Paris Olympics begin. Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Interim Director-General of the Sports Administration Lin Teng-chiao said that to respond to the adjustment of the schedules of major international sports events, a three-in-one preparation strategy for the Olympics, Asian Games and Universiade has been formulated, including dividing Asian Games and Universiade training schedule into stages and assessing whether revision of guidelines for selection of team coaches and athletes is needed, to enhance preparations and actively implement training work for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Sports Administration held the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and 2024 Paris Olympics Training Plan Explanatory Meeting in January with the National Sports Training Center, Related personnel such as representatives of sports associations federations, training team coaches and members of the International Integrated Sports Event Sports Talent Training Guidance Group were invited to attend. In the meeting, Sports Administration Deputy Director-General Hung Chi-chang explained that, to select the best athletes for the Hangzhou Asian Games, the training strategy will be adjusted, and the original third stage of training extended to after the end of the Asian Games, and divided into three phases. Also, guidance will be provided to sports associations (federations) to call Selection and Training Committee meetings directed at athletes who have already been selected to carefully assess whether to revise the guidelines for selecting teams and athletes; if it is judged that selection rules need revising, then a new selection mechanism will be rigorously designed or the original selection rules retained, with trial competition or competition between paired opponents held, to enhance training and preparations.

Second, in response to the successive announcing by the IOC from April this year (2022) of the sports of the 2024 Paris Olympics and qualifying criteria, with regard to the preparation strategy, as well starting training according to the original schedule for the Asian Games (2022) originally scheduled for this year, in September, in the meeting the training methods were also explained. The training of teams for sports that are both Olympic and Asian Games will, in principle, see Olympic training merged into Asian Games training; according to need, before the Asian Games ends, sports associations (federations) can, at any time, submit a training plan to the National Sports Training Center for review by the Guidance Group; as for non-Asian Games sports or Olympic sports with training needs, sports associations (federations) can submit a training plan to the National Sports Training Center for review by the Guidance Group at any time, to allow athletes to smoothly qualify.

Active participation in the Olympics, Asian Games, Universiade and other major international integrated sports events is an important national sports policy. Going forward, we will continue to guide the National Sports Training Center and sport associations (federations) to implement athlete training in each sport on the basis of the training foundation, and act as the strongest backup for athletes. The aim is to extend the spirit of the Tokyo Olympics and realize athletes’ dreams by allowing them win glory on the Paris 20244 Olympics stage, in doing so letting the world see Taiwan.
