The Creativity of the Students of the Republic of China (R.O.C. Taiwan) Shines Brightly at the 2022 International Design Competition Awards Ceremony and Achievements Conference

Date:

The Awards Ceremony and Achievements Conference for the Ministry of Education's (MOE) Incentive Program for Encouraging University/College Students to Participate in International Art and Design Contests will be held on December 9th, 2022. This year, 113 entries have passed the review process. Four entries earned Gold Awards, two won Silver Awards, 10 received Bronze Awards, and 97 were Outstanding Awards or Awards Finalists. The performance of the participating students was outstanding and has been highly recognized internationally!
The Incentive Program’s awards are divided into 7 main categories: “General Design”, “Product Design”, “Visual Communication Design”, “Digital Animation”, “Craft Design”, “Architecture and Landscape Design”, and “Fashion Design”, which are also included in 62 international competitions. Since the introduction of this program in 2006, a total of 56 schools have participated, and 1,543 entries have been awarded. The following are the 2022 winners, by category:
Product Design: "Farmland Guardian", designed by Lai Chien-Chen from the Department of Design at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. This agricultural device is designed to attract and convert locusts into fertilizer or food, aiming to reduce the impact of locust swarms in the Middle East and Africa. Human pedal-power generation was adopted, and local bamboo was used as the raw material. This device is also equipped with a complete servicing system, which reduces the environmental and residential damage caused by locust swarms. This entry was also awarded the “iF Design Talent Award-Best of the Year”.
Visual Communication Design: One of the winners in this category was "Slow Fish", designed by Chang Yu-Tsen, Jiang Luxi, Chen Boxian, and Chuang Cheng-Han from the Department of Visual Communication Design, Chaoyang University of Technology. The concept originated from the global Slow Fish Marine Ecological Protection Campaign. This campaign educates people to know and understand fish, eat seasonal and local fish, understand where fish come from, and eat slowly and sustainably. The “Slow Fish” entry also won a “Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design-Junior Prize”. The other winner in the Visual Communication Design category was “Date with Tea”, designed by Chen Yuqiao and Liao Ting-Yu from the Department of Visual Communication Design at Asia University. This entry used the 24 solar terms in traditional Chinese lunisolar calendars (the traditional way of dividing the year up by the position of the Sun) as the main visual design theme; the team created 24 tea-bag designs, and categorized and packaged Taiwanese tea leaves by the best-suited solar term. They further integrated the visuals of seasonal migratory birds in the Republic of China (R.O.C. Taiwan), so that you can learn about these birds while you enjoy your tea. This entry also won the “New York Art Directors Club (ADC) Annual Awards - Gold Cube in 2022”.
Digital Animation: “Blue Wall” designed by Chung Wan-Yu, Tu Yu-Cheng, and Chen Li-Lin from the Department of Digital Media Design at the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. This entry was about a boy who lives upside down and stays at home with his father. He is not allowed to go out, as his father worries that he will jump from the window and fly away. The naive upside-down boy can only use his imagination to understand the world; hoping one day he will get out of the house and explore the outside world with his own eyes. This entry also won the “New York Art Directors Club (ADC) Annual Awards - Gold Cube in 2022”.
Architecture and Landscape Design: "Arctic Explorer Museum”, designed by Yang Chun-Wei and Chen Yu-Hao from the Department of Architecture at the National United University. The “Arctic Explorer Museum” was based around Tromso, Norway, recreating a unique museum exhibition base that integrates natural topology and landscape with the culture and humanities. The unique spatial changes allowed visitors to shuttle between the exterior rock masses, while indirectly connecting the corresponding history and culture of the exhibition base through irregular spaces and fragmented daylight. This entry also won the “Architecture MasterPrize (AMP)-New Discovery of the Year in 2021”.
The full list of winners has been published on the MOE website under the Incentive Program for Encouraging University/College Students to Participate in International Art and Design Contests, 2022 International Design Competition, at https://www.moe-idc.org/. The entries will be exhibited from 10:00am to 12:00noon on December 9th, 2022 at the International Conference Hall on the 3rd floor of the National Central Library (Address: No. 20, Zhongshan S. Rd., Zhongzheng District, Taipei City 100). In addition, many outstanding new design talents will attend this event, to share and interact with the public. All are welcome to attend the exhibition.
