Date:
Dr. Mark Elliott Vice Provost of International Affairs at Harvard University, holding the MOU signed during his visit to Taiwan

After nearly two years of discussion, facilitated by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Harvard University have established a jointly-funded doctoral fellowship for students from Taiwan.
Professor Mark Elliott, Vice Provost of International Affairs at Harvard University, signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that established the Taiwan–Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Fellowship on March 4, 2024, during a visit to Taiwan at the invitation of the MOE. The two original copies of the MOU had already been signed by Dr. Lee Yen-Yi, acting Director General of the Ministry of Education’s Department of International and Cross-Strait Education.
Professor Elliott, who is also the Mark Schwartz Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History, is a renowned U.S. scholar of Chinese history, particularly the history of the Qing Dynasty. In his remarks during the signing ceremony, he welcomed Taiwan's outstanding students to undertake doctoral degrees at Harvard University. Dr. Lee took part in the ceremony online. In her remarks, she mentioned the healthy and lively exchanges in the field of education that Taiwan and the U.S. have maintained for a long time.
The MOU provides for the award of fellowships each year in the five-year period from 2025 to 2029. The first Taiwan–Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Fellowships will be awarded in the 2025-26 academic year, and the Ministry of Education and Harvard University will co-fund up to five students from Taiwan to undertake a four-year PhD program in any subject offered by the Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Harvard University.
