The International Design Competition comprises a total of 59 international competitions, with awards across seven categories: General Design, Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Digital Animation, Craft Design, Architecture and Landscape Design, and Fashion Design. Since its inception in 2006, the competition has grown to include 62 participating schools and has recognized 1,901 award-winning entries.
The winners of the 2024 awards in each category include:
Product Design: Students Chen Shih-Yu, Lu Wan-Ting, Zeng Shao-Jun, Yang Tsung-Hsun, and Lin Bing-Han from the Department of Creative Product Design at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology’s College of Digital Design created the Portable Refugee Shower System. This innovative mobile shower system optimizes compact storage for mass transport and features easy assembly for multiple users. It is designed to adapt to various terrains in refugee camp settings, with a modular design for easy replacement of damaged components. This design earned a 2024 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) Silver Award and received the First-class Silver Award in the International Design Competition.
Visual Communication Design: Students Lin Zhong-Wei, Hsueh Kai-Chieh, Chen Yu-Ting, and Chang Hsun-Yu from the Department of Arts and Design at the National Taipei University of Education created SUPPLUS, a multi-functional resource box designed for war refugees and disaster survivors. Once delivered, the box transforms into a makeshift toilet with seed layers for growing vegetables on both sides, supporting hygiene and dietary needs. This design won the 2023 Best of the Best award in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and received the First-class Bronze Award in the International Design Competition.
Digital Animation: Graduate student Xie Zong-Yi from the Department of Design at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology’s (NTUST) College of Design created MACGUFFIN, inspired by the concept of a ‘MacGuffin’ from film history, which represents something from our childhood that may seem insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant, but it still plays a crucial role in shaping our personalities. This piece was honored with a Bronze Cube at the 2024 Art Directors Club (ADC) Annual Awards in New York and the First-class Bronze Award in the International Design Competition.
Architecture and Landscape Design: Graduate student Zou Yi-Ti from the Department of Architecture at NTUST’s College of Design created JoyForest—Children’s Cognitive Training Clinic. With an estimated 7.7 million children aged 6-17 years old experiencing mood disorders, JoyForest uses a forest theme to foster interaction between children and nature, parents, and peers. It creates a safe and comforting space that eases children’s anxiety about treatment and thus improves therapeutic effects. This project received First Place in the 2024 IIDA Student Design Competition and the Third-class Gold Award in the International Design Competition.
