First “India-Taiwan Students Conference on India and China: Exploring New Rising Powers” held in New Delhi
The first “India-Taiwan Students Conference on India and China: Exploring New Rising Powers” was held in New Delhi, India on January 21-22, 2014. The two-day conference was jointly organized by Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, and National Tsing Hwa University and National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan. There were five panels and ten presentations were made on topics related to international relations between Taiwan, India, and China, and associated cultural and economic issues.

Member of Parliament D. P. Tripathi chaired the conference and welcomed all the participants from Taiwan and India. Prof. Girijesh Pant, Dean of JNU’s School of International Studies School of International Studies, presented Ambassador Tien Chung-Kwang with a copy of the academic journal “Think India” as a souvenir, and Prof. B.R. Deepak, coordinator at JNU’s Center of Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, JNU commented “The conference is the first of its kind at JNU and it will be continued in the future as well if funding permits.”

Ambassador Tien Chung-Kwang was invited to speak at the opening ceremony. He began by remarking that he could see a bright future for both India and Taiwan seeing such a gathering of young scholars and students from these two countries. He then brought participants to the topic of the relations between India and Taiwan with some details of their history and recent developments, including educational exchanges. He pointed out that language is a tool for people to open up a whole new spectrum of interactions between two countries, and that the establishment of Taiwan Education Centers in India has led to more and more Indian students learning Mandarin Chinese. He expressed his hope that through cooperation of every kind, the upcoming generation will come out with more and more new ideas.
