TUSA Scholars Share Research Results with Taiwan Scholars in New England

Date:
The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston began sponsoring the Annual TUSA Scholars Forum in 2013.* The forum provides a stage to showcase research done by TUSA scholars visiting Harvard University and MIT and an opportunity for greater interaction between expatriates in New England and Ministry of Education-sponsored scholars. It is hope that this will generate even more opportunities for international educational exchanges and joint research projects. The Education Division invited the Taiwan Youth Chamber of Commerce of New England (TYCCNE), the New England Association of Chinese Professionals, and the Federation of New England Taiwan Student Associations (FNETSA) to co-sponsor the 2014 TUSA Scholars Forum.

The first lecture of the Forum took place on March 20, 2014, as part of TYCCNE’s WeMeet Series. Dr. Yu-lin Lee from National Chung-Hsing University, currently a visiting professor at Harvard, gave a talk titled “Seediq Bale and post-colonial Taiwan”. The highly acclaimed 2011 film “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale”, directed by Wei Te-Sheng and produced by John Woo, is based on the 1930 Wushe incident in which a Taiwanese indigenous tribe rose up against the Japanese colonial government.. Dr. Lee discussed the plot, and its visual presentation, and how revisiting the Wushe incident through this very popular movie has influenced Taiwanese culture and politics.

The New England Association of Chinese Professionals, the Education Division, and the Federation of New England Taiwan Student Associations presented two other lectures at the main Annual TUSA Scholar Forum event on March 29. Dr. Kwai-Ron Ni from National Chiao-Tung University talked about “Food Safety and U.S. Regulations on Animal Drugs”. Great numbers of families in the US and Taiwan have pets, and the safety of pet foods and medications is attracting increasingly more attention. Dr. Ni provided information on the U.S. and EU standards for chemical and drug-related additives used in pet foods, and the US FDA animal drug safety classifications, and related rules and regulations. Dr. Wei-Chi Liu from National Taiwan Normal University spoke about the “American Influence on the Discipline of Education in Modern China”.
