Young Taiwanese Artists Bring Sentimental Landscapes to Life

Date:

In the 16th century, Portuguese mariners gave the name “Ilha Formosa”, meaning “beautiful island” to the island which is home to the people of Taiwan. Inspired by thoughts of their hardworking ancestors’ lives as new immigrants on this beautiful island, a group of young contemporary artists from Taiwan turned to visual forms to communicate the sentiments aroused, creating art pieces that reflect Taiwan’s cultures and way of life. These professionally trained, talented artists use art media ranging from oils, acrylics, watercolors, ink, clay, wood, and metal to multimedia, and their works take the form of traditional paintings, sculpture, public art installations, and contemporary action art. They now want to turn their hand to putting together an exhibition that eloquently gives voice to the history and culture of Taiwan, and they reached out to the Education Division of TECO Houston with a great enthusiasm about introducing Taiwan to the Greater Houston Area through the perspective of art. Whether through education or some other vehicle, the Education Division of TECO in Houston never turns away from an opportunity to promote Taiwan, and it organized an exhibition planning meeting and fundraising luncheon with Mr. Hou Chung-Ying, one of the artists in the group. This was held at the Rice University Faculty Club on January 29, 2018, hosted by Peter Chen, Director General of TECO in Houston. A number of community leaders who are strong supporters of art joined them. A Sentimental Landscapes exhibition of pieces by multi-award winning Taiwanese artists, each with international art exhibition experience, is tentatively scheduled to take place in Houston at the end of 2018. It’s estimated that 500 people will attend the grand opening of the Exhibition. Such an exhibition will give Houstonians an opportunity to raise their awareness and appreciation of Taiwan’s art, and learn more about the beautiful island of Taiwan.
