TECRO in the U.S. and ACIE Co-host “A Taste of Taiwan”

Date:

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. (TECRO) and American Councils for International Education (ACIE) co-hosted a successful silent auction and ACIE open house evening on October 25th. They raised more than $28,000, which will be used to provide scholarships for students studying the culture and language of Taiwan.

This annual event was held at the ACIE headquarters in DC and this year celebrated three years of cooperation by TECRO and ACIE on Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP), and their joint commitment to students and scholars.

Mr. Lorner W. Craner, the president of ACIE, and Mr. Yuri Chih, the director of the Education Division at TECRO both spoke at the event. Mr. Craner first thanked the sponsors and many generous contributors who support the goals of the evening event, and the Silent Auction host committee and volunteers who worked hard to make the evening a success. Mr. Chih then talked about the importance of the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program. He emphasized that this summer program gives the learners an opportunity to complete a year’s academic study in only eight weeks, and he encouraged young Americans to apply for a chance to study in a truly immersive learning environment.

The program is tailor-made and combines twenty hours of weekly small group and one-on-one language instruction with regular cultural workshops, excursions, interaction with language partners, and a weekend homestay with a local host family. Over the past three years, TISLP has provided nearly 70 American students with an opportunity to study in Taiwan.

The theme of the evening was “A Taste of Taiwan” and it featured Taiwanese food, drinks, and cultural performances, as well as a silent auction of items from around the world. Close to 200 guests enjoyed the vibrant and enriching evening. All the proceeds from the successful silent auction will be used for scholarships for American students undertaking the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program, and thereby expand access to educational opportunities that will impact the trajectory of students’ professional and personal development.
