The University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific, UMAP, founded in 1993, is one of the largest international academic organizations in Asia and the Pacific region. Member countries or territories include Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Philippines, Samoa, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

In 2011, Taiwan took over the UMAP International Secretariat (IS) office from Thailand. In 2012, the “UMAP Taiwan Exchange Student Program Scholarship” which is funded by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan began. This scholarship not only encourages university student exchange among UMAP member countries and territories but also promotes cultural and academic exchange. In 2012, UMAP awarded nine students with a monthly allowance of 20,000 NTD to sponsor their study in Taiwan or in other member countries and territories. The duration of the exchange program is for one to two semesters, and scholarship applications are accepted twice a year based on the timeline of USCO (UMAP Student Connection Online). All applicants for the scholarship must be UMAP outbound exchange students from Taiwan or UMAP inbound exchange students from other countries/territories to Taiwan and who have been successfully accepted by the host institutions through the USCO online exchange student system.
