Taiwan Wins a Silver Medal in the Category of Energy in 2013 I-SWEEEP

Ms. Ting-Wei Gau and Ms. Chih-Ning Ho, two students from the Taipei First Girls’ High School were selected by National Taiwan Science Education Center (NTEC) to present a project on “Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells for Hydrogen Generation by Photocatalytic Water Splitting” at the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad, I-SWEEEP. They were awarded a silver medal in the category of energy, on May 12th, 2013 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, in Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

Their project was evaluated as -SWEEEP 2013 Special Award Winners by the Tunisian Association for the Future of Sciences and Technology(ATAST). They won a trip to ATAST Sciences & Technology Camp. The Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, extended a congratulatory message to these young women on behalf of Education Minister Wei-ling Chiang, from the Ministry of Education in Taiwan.

Houston was the host to this first annual International Science Fair for the promotion of sustainable energy. The competition was geared towards students in grades 9 through 12, from all over the world. I-SWEEEP is an unique international science fair because it focuses on energy, engineering, and environmental projects. The I-SWEEEP goal is to plant seeds in high school students into looking for alternative solutions for a sustainable world. The purpose is to see our youth become more enthusiastic about learning. This contest has been promoting sustainable energy solutions since 2008. In 2013, there were 68 countries, 158 international projects, 845 students and 360 teachers from around the world attending this contest, including 26 countries from Asia, such as Korea, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, Russia and Saudi Arabia. The projects were judged by officials from area universities, including the University of Texas at Houston and the Rice University. Winners not only received medals for their efforts, but university scholarships. It is important that the best young minds are recognized for their efforts to keep the world more sustainable place.
