The Children’s Chinese Competency Certification（CCCC） is designed by The Steering Committee of the Test of Proficiency （SC-TOP）to serve the growing population of young Mandarin Chinese learners all over the world. The CCCC test has gained more attention in the area of Los Angeles, since a pilot test was provided by the Education Division in Los Angeles, in 2008. Additionally, the Buckley School, Broadway Elementary School, Chinese School of San Marino, and AAA Academy also held the test which was provided by Education Division in Los Angeles on November 11.

The Irvine Chinese School (ICS), founded in 1976, is one of the most important institutions dedicated to Mandarin Chinese education in Los Angeles with currently more than one thousand enrollments ranging from five to eighteen years old. Those who participated in the CCCC test are from non-native Chinese speaking families. In the 3rd or 4th grades 104 students took the sprouting level exam and 39 students between 5th and 7th grades took the seedling level exam. The test consists of 2 major parts: listening and comprehension. “ This test serves to evaluate our teaching methods, materials and the curriculum ” said Mrs. Yulan Chong, principal of the school. It’s an opportunity for teachers to understand how their students are learning the language and to examine their teaching methods for the future course plan. With the implementation of CCCC, we hope to help teachers and parents to encourage more students to learn Mandarin Chinese.
