MOE and Columbia sign an MOU establishing Taiwan Columbia Scholarships

The Ministry of Education and Columbia University have established a Taiwan Columbia Scholarship initiative to encourage Taiwanese students to pursue a Ph.D. at Columbia. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding on September 1, 2014, at the Ministry’s office in Taipei. Dr. Joan Kaufman, Director of Columbia Global Centers - East Asia, signed on behalf of Columbia University, while Dr. Min-ling Yang, Director-General of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education, signed on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

The Taiwan Columbia Scholarship program to support outstanding Taiwanese students is the result of many months of collaboration with Columbia’s Provost’s Office, after the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York first approached Columbia about creating such a new scholarship.

This new Taiwan Columbia Scholarship program will support up to five Taiwanese Ph.D. students each year, with the Ministry and Columbia sharing the costs of tuition, other academic fees, and a stipend. Taiwanese students who are applying to undertake any Doctor of Philosophy program at Columbia University will be eligible to apply for the Taiwan Columbia Scholarship.

The Ministry of Education has signed similar agreements with other top universities, such as Cal Tech, the University of Southern California, and Washington University in St. Louis, but Columbia is the first and only Ivy League school, making this agreement all the more significant.

Columbia University, an Ivy League school, is among the most prestigious universities in the world. Many Taiwanese students dream of being able to study there and Taiwan’s Columbia Alumni Association today counts over 1,100 members.
