The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada co-hosted a screening of the film “Diaoyutai: Sovereignty seen from the Republic of China (Taiwan)” with the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies at the University of Ottawa on September 23, 2014. This public event attracted an audience that included well over 30 scholars.

This 28-minute film explains the historiographical rationale behind the stance of the Republic of China regarding these uninhabited islands whose sovereignty is disputed by three nations. The screening was followed by a discussion led by the Representative Bruce J.D. Linghu. Professor Scott Simon who holds the research Chair in Taiwan Studies gave a brief overview of the meaning of "sovereignty" in political anthropology. The event concluded with a Q&A session and further discussion over refreshments.

The Chair in Taiwan Studies at the University of Ottawa was collaboratively founded in 2011 by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada and the university. The Chair promotes the development of undergraduate and graduate classes in Taiwan Studies and supports research and public lectures on Taiwan studies. The Taiwan Studies activities are interdisciplinary, reaching across the disciplines and fields of the Faculty of Social Science which have areas of common interest and similar academic research goals.
