font-size:
The 2013 MOE European Union Scholarship has been announced. This scholarship, sponsored by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan and the European Commission (EC), is meant to encourage Taiwan students to apply for admission to Master’s and PhD’s programs with an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. Doing graduate study in Europe will give the students a greater understanding of the international academic world, and at the same time make Taiwan students more competitive internationally.
These Master’s and PhD’s programs are offered by universities in EU member states, and the EC provide scholarships for foreign students. Erasmus Mundus Scholarship students are required to study and do research in more than two different EU universities during two academic years. In 2012, 10 Taiwan students were selected (8 for Master, 2 for PhD degrees), and another 50 students (43 for Master, 7 for PhD degrees) were on the waiting list.
The purpose of this European Union Scholarship, sponsored by the MOE, is to support Taiwan students selected from the waiting list of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. This scholarship started in 2006, and in the beginning, 5 students from Taiwan were selected each year, with each one getting an annual subsidy of 12 thousand US dollars. The MOE raised the subsidy to 12 thousand Euros for each student in 2007. In 2008, the number of students supported increased from 5 to 8, and in 2010 PhD students were added to the list. Between 2006 and 2012, the MOE had granted this scholarship for 7 times, and had supported 49 students to study for Master and PhD degrees in Europe.
In 2012, the MOE selected 8 students among those on the waiting list and subsidized their graduate study in EU member states. This year (2013), the MOE continues to encourage the talented Taiwan students to study in Europe. The MOE will select 5-8 students, depending on the number of applicants and the results of the test. Each selected one can receive 12 thousand Euros per year; Master students can get the scholarship for 1 year, and PhD students can get it for 3 years.
Students who intend to apply for the 2013 MOE European Union Scholarship are required to have admission from universities which offer the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for graduate study in Europe first, and then to apply for scholarships from the EC. If a student’s test results place him or her on the waiting list, then he or she can then apply for this scholarship at Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium by May 15th, 2013, as explained in the brochure.
