A delegation of 20 early childhood education scholars and practitioners from Taiwan, headed by Dr. Shu-Chin Susan Chen, associate professor of early childhood education from National Taichung University of Education, visited Berlin on November 20 and 21, 2014. They are all dedicated to researching and promoting quality education for preschool children and wanted to observe the teaching activities in Germany and to exchange ideas and details of their own experience with educators and administrators there.

The Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Berlin arranged for the delegation to be received by Prof. Dr. Hartmut Wedekind from Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Wedekind introduced the group to the newly built Helleum, an innovative Learning and Research Center for Children and Youth (Kinderforscherzentrum) in Berlin. The Kinderforscherzentrum is based on the concept of a “learning workshop” and it was designed to incorporate the latest early learning and teaching concepts. A feature of its educational approach is that it allows children to explore science and technology as a learning process. The scholars from Taiwan found this visit, together with a lecture by Prof. Wedekind and a vivid discussion with him, extremely informative and insightful.

The delegation also visited a primary school that operates using the learning workshop concept and an affiliated child-oriented animal farm. They observed the children learning in participative settings and saw that the children were very motivated to explore their world with all their senses under careful guidance.

The delegation returned to Taiwan after experiencing these learning settings, accompanied by Education Division personnel, full of impressions and valuable information and ideas.
