Michigan Taiwanese American Organization (MITAI) held a Pre-Career Workshop for Michigan Taiwanese Students Association (MTSA) members at the beginning of 2016. The goal was to help students to do more preparation and ease their nervousness about interviews before the University of Michigan’s Career Fair which would be held four days later on January 20.

MITAI and MTSA worked together to organize the workshop. MITAI invited Dr. Song Ling Young, CEO of Optimal CAE Inc., to talk about “How to look for a job in the US - from the point of view of an employer” and invited Dr. Ten Bin Juang, a Ford Motor Company supervisor, to talk about “How to do well in an interview in the US - from the point of view of a supervisor.

This was followed by two presenters giving detailed practical advice. Ms. Yu Jing Liu spoke about “How to perform in an interview, your body language, and how you should dress” and Ms. Amy Seetoo spoke about “How to deal with cultural differences in an interview”.

In the last part of the workshop, Mr. Jerry Lan, a product engineer at Griswold Engineering Inc., shared his experiences in looking for jobs, changing his work status, applying for a green card, and so on. Mr. David Dong, a senior officer at the Education Division at TECO in Chicago encouraged all the attendees to do their best to pursue their dream job in the US. At the same time, he reminded them they are always welcome to register with the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Hi-Recruit Services, another pathway for good job opportunities, and said he looked forward to seeing the attending students participate in future job related events as speakers.

The workshop ended with a lively Q & A section and finished at 5:00pm.
