The Ministry of Education in Taiwan awards Taiwan Scholarships to a number of deserving Australian students each year. More and more young Australians understand that familiarity with Asia is a very valuable asset and highly regarded by employers, given Australia’s close proximity to Asia. And studying in Taiwan is a perfect way to develop such this. Taiwan Scholarship winners can undertake a bachelor’s or master’s degree or even a doctorate at a university in Taiwan, and the number of applicants continues to grow each year.

Two Australians won a Ministry of Education Taiwan Scholarship this year, and both plan to undertake a two-year master’s degree in Taiwan. One of the winners, Cameron Hall, has a passionate interest in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. He graduated from the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is a registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, in the Acupuncturist, Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioner, and Chinese Herbal Dispenser categories.

A two-month internship in Taiwan reinforced Cameron’s decision to deepen his understanding by doing a higher degree. He’ll travel to Taiwan in September 2016 to begin a master’s degree in Chinese Medicine training at China Medical University, and be working with senior doctors in the practical setting of the university hospital, as well as immersing himself in Taiwanese culture.

He also wants to help to build bridges to connect Australian practitioners of Chinese medicine with Taiwanese hospitals and educational facilities: “I believe that Taiwan is well advanced in the area of complementary treatment methods and protocols, incorporating both traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. In Taiwan, the local students are very fortunate in that they get much exposure to many health conditions in the hospital and observing the various treatment methods of the senior doctors. In my opinion this allows students a more well-rounded learning and increases their exposure to unique and complex cases, and this in turn better prepares the student for real life clinics”.
