The Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK hosted the annual gathering of the Taiwan Alumni Association (TAA) on June 1st at SOAS at the University of London. The meeting, attended by more than twenty people, brought together past and current recipients of Taiwan Scholarships or Huayu Enrichment Scholarships.

Mr Cheng Shyang-Yun, the Deputy Representative, commenced the evening’s proceedings by welcoming the group, and introducing himself and his colleagues. He expressed their hope that the UK’s TAA network would grow and develop as ever-increasing numbers of returned scholarship students want to maintain their links with Taiwan.

Mr Alex Huang, Director of the Public Affairs Division, then spoke about Taiwan’s foreign policy. This was of particular interest because that the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president had taken place only the week before. Ms Cora Wang, Assistant Director of the Public Services Division, then explained the visa application process and she also took the opportunity to promote Taiwan’s participation in the Youth Mobility Scheme.

Ms Arzhia Habibi then shared some of her experiences and favourite memories of studying as a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship recipient. Arzhia had recently returned after studying Mandarin at National Chengchi University for six months, and she offered plenty of practical advice as well as sharing her enthusiasm.

After these formal presentations, the attendees were invited to help themselves to the buffet, glasses of wine, and other refreshments provided. The new scholarship recipients were able to chat with past scholarship recipients and meet other people who had also received a scholarship this year and in due course would be departing for Taiwan. Taipei Representative Office staff members were also on hand to answer any remaining questions, and get to know the former scholarship recipients and this year’s in person.
