National Tsing Hua University and the Technical University of Berlin sign an Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchange

Prof. Dr. Hong Hocheng, president of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen, the president of Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) signed an Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchange on March 31, 2017 in Berlin. Professor Chao Chi-chao, the Vice President for Global Affairs at NTHU, Prof. Dr. Shieh Jhy-wey, the Representative of Taiwan in Germany, Ms Weng Chin-Ying, the Director of Education Division at Taipei Representative Office in Germany, together with Prof. Dr. Holger Kohl of Sustainable Corporate Development at TU Berlin and Mrs. Evelina Skurski - Head of the Team for Scientific Cooperation and Strategic Partnerships at TU Berlin all witnessed the signing ceremony, marking the beginning of a new period of closer collaboration.

The Education Division at the Taipei Representative Office in Germany assisted Prof. Thomsen to arrange his initial visit to National Tsing Hua University in September 2016. Both universities specialize in the natural sciences academic fields. After this first contact, NTHU and TU Berlin discussed possibilities for collaborations. This led to a second meeting this year, and these two universities which both enjoy an excellent reputation have now established a partnership for bilateral academic exchanges of their professors and students.

Both presidents share views on the importance of mutual cooperation and digitalization (for example the so-called “smart city”). Signing this Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchange will help b both universities become more internationalized. Prof. Thomsen indicated that he expected that in the future, more graduates of NTHU will be able to pursue a further degree, or undertake a joint degree program at TU Berlin which is one of the University of TU9, the Alliance of leading Institutes of Technology in Germany.
