Six student-athletes from Malaysia participated in the 2017 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games in the R.O.C (Taiwan) which were held at National Taiwan University from May 5 to May 11.
The young athletes were selected and sent by the Malaysian University Sport Council (MASUM) to compete in various sports categories, including Taekwondo (Poomsae), Karatedo (Individual Kata), and field games (long jump and high jump). They are students at six different public and private universities in Malaysia: University Putra Malaysia, University Teknologi Malaysia, University Malaysia Sabah, Infrastructure University of Kuala Lumpur, International Islamic University Malaysia, and Help University.
The Sport Administration of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation invited MASUM to participate in this year’s Games through the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia. Mr. Chu To-Ming, Director of the Education Division pointed out that these Games are the most iconic annual sport event organized by the MOE. They are intended to serve as a platform for mutual exchanges between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries. He added that as well as inviting student-athletes the Ministry also invited two administrative officials from MASUM and two sports coaches to join in the Games.
MASUM was established in Malaysia in 1974 at the initiative of university sport authorities at the time to hold sports competitions among university staff. The council is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and it is affiliated with the International University Sports Federation, and the Asian University Sports Federation.
