Thirty-one Australians have been awarded a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Taiwan. This gives them an opportunity to study Mandarin in a language immersion environment.
Taiwan has long been an ideal destination to study Mandarin. There are 56 Mandarin Chinese language centers which are each affiliated with a university in Taiwan. The MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) program offers scholarships to eligible outstanding Australian students and professionals who want to learn Mandarin for a period of up to one year in one of these language centers.
The HES program is a component of the Taiwan Fellowships & Scholarships Program, a government initiative to promote research, educational links, and enduring friendships between Taiwan and the global community. These scholarships have recently been integrated into the New Southbound Talent Development Program, a range of grants and subsidy programs developed as part of the New Southbound Policy. The New Southbound Policy targets Southeast and South Asian countries, and Australia and New Zealand as potential strategic partners for regional social and economic cooperation. One of its key features is promotion of the teaching and learning of Mandarin and of the languages of all the target countries, and learning about their cultures.
