The Riverside Cup is an important annual basketball tournament for students from Taiwan in the Southern California area. On April 5. 12 male teams and 6 female teams from 9 universities–UCI, UCLA, UCR, UCSB, UCSD, USC, CSUF, CSULB, and CSUSB–participated in this year’s competition.

The event is organized by the Taiwanese Graduate Student Association (TGSA) at University of California, Riverside (UCR)and sponsored by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles. It intended to foster camaraderie among the overseas students and enrich their lives. The director of the Education Division, Dr. Li-Ling Liang, gave an address at the opening ceremony and encouraged students to link together through sports.

Mr. Wei-Ting Kao, head of TGSA at UCR which is the host university and organizer, shared his experiences in conducting such a large event involving nine universities. The TGSA members are allocated into one of 4 divisions with different areas of responsibility: Public Relations (PR); the Game Schedule; Game Score Record; and Mobility Assistance. The many practical tasks they are in charge include contacting the participants, games scheduling, and negotiating referee fees. All their efforts are to ensure the competition runs smoothly and safely.

After competing for a total of almost 8 hours, the UCLA team took first place in the male tournament, and the UCSD male team was placed second. In the female tournament, USC took first place and UCLA was placed second. Although it was physically exhausting for the players, and required a lot of time from everyone, organizers and participants alike, the Riverside Cup was very successful and helped participants to build relationships that will enrich their personal and professional lives. Everyone hopes to see one each other and greet new students from Taiwan at next year’s basketball tournament.
