Sharing 2014 MOE Scholarship Students’ Excitement!
After nearly two months of application reviews and several extensive discussions, the Ministry of Education (MOE) Scholarship Review Committee, finally determined the handful of successful candidates for this year’s MOE Taiwan Scholarships and MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarships (HES). Once confirmed, the Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston (TECO) sent out the Review Committee’s decisions to candidates, by snail mail and e-mail.
Before the Memorial Day long weekend holiday, the Education Division’s e-mail inbox was flooded with messages expressing excitement and gratitude, and questions related to preparations for their departure to Taiwan, from the successful MOE scholarship applicants soon to undertake studies in Taiwan. They, and college students planning to study in Taiwan, were invited to a survival-basics-for-international-students orientation and lunch at the TECO-Houston office at Greenway Plaza. Some local university professors also took part to share their experiences of Taiwan and their passions for getting to know more about its land, culture, and people.
The gathering, on Friday May 30, turned out to be very enjoyable and successful. Participants held Taiwan’s highly popular savory-crispy chicken nuggets in one hand, and equally popular pearl milk tea in the other and listened while Education Division staff told them about the wide range of scholarships offered by the MOE for pursuing study or research in Taiwan. The participants enthusiastically posed questions and received lots of practical advice and tips in response, along with a list of useful websites.
They walked out of the TECO office feeling well-fed, with smiles on their faces, and looking forward to being in Taiwan. One of the HES recipients remarked “I don’t have my return trip ticket yet. I’ll see after my 9-month Huayu study with HES.”
