Figure of Taiwan's Santaizi at a Japanese High School Festival Attracts Great Interest
Hannan High School in Osaka Prefecture is keen to promote students' understanding of Taiwan, and so it invited TECO in Osaka to participate in this year’s culture festival activities there on September 14, 2014. Teachers and students of Hannan High School first visited National Feng Yuan High School in Taiwan three years ago, in response to an initial suggestion by TECO in Osaka. Their first exchange experiences were very successful, so groups from each school have visited each other every year since then. The two schools signed a sister-school agreement in October last year

TECO in Osaka set up a booth on campus for this year’s culture festival, to give local people some examples of Taiwanese culture, and information about studying in Taiwan. Taiwanese culture was represented in the form of a figure of Santaizi, traditional puppets, and oolong tea.

The smiling Santaizi wearing an ancient general’s uniform and modern sunglasses attracted many students and parents to look and take photos. The students welcomed him very warmly and described him as “cute”. Some parents and children bowed respectfully before the figure of Santaizi when they learnt that Santaizi is one of the traditional Taiwanese protection gods.

The Hannan High School principal Shiomi Yoshinari thanked TECO in Osaka for its great efforts toward making this year's culture festival “more varied and richer in content than ever before!”
