The Ministry of Education in Taiwan and the University of St. Thomas, located in Houston, have established a new partnership to develop a Taiwan Studies Program. A Taiwan Studies Grant Signing Ceremony was held on May 2, 2016 at the University of St. Thomas. Louis Huang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, and Dr. Robert Ivany, president of the University of St. Thomas, witnessed the signing, and many influential community leaders and sponsors were present to celebrate this occasion.
The objective of the Taiwan Studies Program is to facilitate interdisciplinary and academic research and teaching on topics germane to the study of Taiwan. The program will include enhancing Taiwan Studies course offerings by appointing a post-doctoral fellow specializing in politics in East Asia and international relations, with a special focus on Taiwan’s domestic development and international relations. The University of St. Thomas will also develop academic exchanges with Taiwan by hosting biennial conferences, through annual faculty exchanges, and having its undergraduate and graduate students go to Taiwan to undertake studies abroad, and by hosting students from Taiwan at the University
