11 Outstanding Taiwanese Students Win Prizes at the 2016 Intel International Science & Engineering Fair
ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science competition and eleven of the Taiwanese students won a total of 13 awards: a trip to the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, an Intel ISEF Best of Category Award, 8 Grand Awards, and 3 Special Awards. Their achievements were the best performance Taiwan has ever had. The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Los Angeles attended the Intel ISEF Grand Awards Ceremony on May 13 and extended messages of congratulations to the winners on behalf of the Minister of Education in Taiwan.
The 13 outstanding students were selected from the Taiwan International Science Fair. The Director-General of National Taiwan Science Education Center Dr. Chu Nan-Shyan said, “These students kept learning hard and improving their skills before going abroad and finally forged ahead on the international stage. With professional counseling and guidance from Dr. Lin Jung-yaw, Emeritus Professor at National Taiwan University, and other experienced professors, they made enormous efforts to learn research methods, scientific procedures, English expressions and international etiquette.”
The eight award-winning works and the students who created each one are listed below:
1)INTEL ISEF Best of Category Award of $5,000; Math 1st Place Award of $3,000; American Math Society’s Special Awards 3rd Place Award of $500; and a trip to the European Union Contest for Young Scientists: Chang Pei-Hsuan’s “Nested Eggs: Where Brianchon, Pascal and Poncelet Meet”
2)Physics and Astronomy Second Place Award of $1,500: Lin Bo-Han’s “Nanobubble: Generation and Applications”
3)Earth and Environmental Sciences 3rd Place Award of $1,000 and American Meteorological Society 1st Place Award of $2,000: Chen Yu-Hung and Chen Shih’s “Experimental Simulation of Cellular Convection with Miso Soup”
4)Chemistry 3rd Place Award of $1,000; and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) 1st Place Award of $2,000: Lin Cheng-Pei’s “UV-Light Sensitive Transparent Organic Solar Cells”
5)Biomedical and Health Sciences 3rd Place Award of $1,000: Luo Anin and Chu Tsan-Mei’s “Inhibitory Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids-Based Fish Oil on Cholangiocarcinoma”
6)Animal Science 4th Place Award of $500: Wu Chi-Yuen’s “Immune Reactions of Encapsulation in Cockroaches”
7)Biochemistry 4th Place Award of $500: Huang Yu-Ting and Lin Jia-Lan’s “Misfolded alpha-synuclein: Assessment of Lactulose and Melibiose for Parkinson’s Disease”
8)Engineering Mechanics 4th Place Award of $500: Chen Yen-Chen’s “Rotating Fluid in Paraboloidal Tank Tuned Liquid Damper as an Effective Vibration Absorber”
The winners will all receive a scholarship prize, ranging from NTD 50,000 to NTD 200,000 and be offered admission to top universities in Taiwan.
