Taiwan welcomes 2017 New Colombo Plan Scholars
On November 28, 2016, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the three Australian undergraduate students who have won a prestigious New Colombo Plan (NCP) scholarship to live, study, and work in Taiwan as an NCP Taiwan Scholar in 2017: Daniel de Waard, Cameron Hee, and Abigail Slater. They will be joined by over 118 students who will come to Taiwan for a range of short courses, exchanges, practicums, and internships under the NCP mobility grants program.
Cameron and Slater visited the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Australia for a briefing about studying in Taiwan, along with Anna Vaughan, who was one of the four NCP Taiwan Scholars in 2016 and the first NCP Fellow to Taiwan. Anna spent six months studying at National Taiwan University and in addition, she undertook a research based internship in the Physics Department at Academia Sinica, the highest academic institution in Taiwan.
Elliott Charng, Taiwan Representative to Australia, and Andy Bi, the Executive Director of the Education Division at TECO met with the NCP scholars and congratulated them on their achievements. On behalf of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, Mr Bi encouraged them all to explore the learning opportunities in Taiwan as well as immersing themselves in the Mandarin-speaking environment there.

Abigail Slater, who is studying for a Bachelor of Philosophy at the Australian National University, was named Taiwan Fellow for 2017. She plans to study Neuroscience and Chinese at National Taiwan University and undertake a research internship with a neuroscience institute in Taiwan.

Cameron Hee is a Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Western Australia. He will spend a year at National Taiwan University, focusing on Asian studies, economics, and finance. He also plans to undertake several internships with finance or trade firms in Taiwan.

Daniel de Waard, who is currently studying electrical and computer system engineering, and commence at Monash University, will undertake courses in Electronics and Chinese at National Taiwan University. He plans to do an internship with a Taiwan electronics company.

The New Colombo Plan is an Australian Government initiative to promote student mobility by encouraging more Australian students to undertake study and internships in locations across the Indo-Pacific region. More than 300 Australian students have come to Taiwan to live, study, and undertake work-based experiences since the NCP began.
