ULB explores collaboration with Taiwan’s universities
The Ministry of Education invited a delegation from the Free University of Brussels (ULB), led by Rector Yvon Englert to visit Taiwan from August 28 to 31, 2017. ULB is one of Belgium’s top research universities, outstanding for its work in a variety of fields, including medicine, physics, mathematics, life sciences, politics, and business, and it has thus far produced five Nobel laureates, as well as numerous world leading scientists.

The ULB delegation comprised six people: Rector Yvon Englert; Professor Marie-Soleil Frere, the Vice-Rector for International Relations; Dr. Vanessa Frangville, the Chair of Chinese Language and Culture; and Dr. Jean-Louis Moortgat from the International Relations Office, Dr. Dominique Demonté, Director of the Biopark Charleroi Brussels South; and Professor Bruno Van Pottelsberghe, Dean of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management. They visited National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Chengchi University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Central University, National Yang-Ming University, National Tsing Hua University, and Hsinchu Science Park. During their visits the delegation signed the first university-level agreement with National Taiwan Normal University and renewed existing collaborations with National Central University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. They also explored new opportunities, such as creating joint degree programs, and exchange agreements.

On August 31, the Ministry of Education hosted a lunch banquet for the ULB delegation to express its support and encouragement for the further development of academic collaborations between ULB and Taiwan. The delegation concluded their trip was a success. They were pleased with the friendly and open welcome they received and believe that the basis for further enhancing ties with Taiwan’s institutions has been established.
